I've been pondering what the inaugural post-move topic might be. The month-long gap in my blogging lends inspiration. My Mac and Steve's PC don't like the same kind of router or hub device. As a result only one of us can get on the internet each evening (which is admittedly very few minutes between unpacking boxes) on their "own" computer. Which leads to the topic of What Happens When Households Collide.
> PCs and Macs don't co-habitate easily (his PC is hooked up).
> Figuring out how to organize the office turned out to be controversial.
> We agreed in theory to share both closets (a true test of a relationship). I was delighted to find that he didn't have enough "stuff" so I've taken over the second closet...and will probably sprawl into shelves set aside for guy stuff. He threw out clothes; I threw out - gasp - some shoes I haven't worn since before 1995.
> His Coriel dishes are in the garage; together we have the sum of our two family's blue-and-white Currier & Ives plates (the Seven Fishes Feast will be no problem)
> I've been banned from mentioning (even in a tiny voice) that things don't match (like Currier & Ives plates in a pseudo Tuscan SoCal home....).
> Sentiment is tied to appliances - he's yearning for his toaster oven; i'm yearning for my coffee maker (both still in storage unit) - no substitutes allowed.
> The Man is starting to talk to the dog. The dog is really excited to see Steve in the evening. We're forming a pack, not an un-pack.
Today I fly back to Santa Fe for the final house packing and
closing. This has been quite an experience - selling a house in a
buyers' market. My guess is that we have buyers who really wanted
a new Santa Fe home in an established Santa Fe neighborhood. My
house didn't quite meet that expectation since it was built in the
1950's and was renovated by amateurs five years ago. In old Santa Fe
things are hand built, corners aren't square, floors aren't flat and
"codes" have grey zones. Things that I lived with (quirks!) they found
unacceptable. This weekend we finally all agreed on a final solution
(that doesn't require me to fix anything) so I'm headed back to move
out my stuff....and leave the house impeccably clean so that we don't
have any more kerfuffles. My prediction is that they'll move in
and learn to live with the quirks too...but you can't make that
suggestion in a buyers' market! As buyers in California -
admittedly the house is only a decade or so old - we were pretty
easy. We requested that they bring some stuff up to code (which
is black and white in California) and that was it.
This was my February horoscope, courtesy Vanity Fair magazine: ...."Close your eyes and take one long, deep, calming breath. That's your message right now. To lower your blood pressure, allay your anxieties, and make sure the oxygen in your blood is flowing to all the right places at all the right times, you need to take time to inhale and exhale.....many Geminis are having trouble performing this simple operation. That's right: in, out, in, out."
So the noise in my head is not because I'm between jobs, presently selling my house, packing and moving, buying another house, starting a new job next month, while also learning how to be a roommate and partner and still stay "beloved." It's that the rulers of my 3rd and 8th houses are so dominant!
Luckily I'm in tune with the cosmic forces since I high tailed it on my own pat to a Mexican resort/spa last week. I hiked mountains, took Iyengar yoga classes, and ate good food while getting loads of sleep. I can now send my breath all the way out both shoulders.
