Last night I flew into Albuquerque airport ~ 10pm. A full moon illuminated the snow cover on the landscape from west of Flagstaff all the way into ABQ. Just thrilling to the 30 of us on the nearly empty Southwest airliner. I sat behind an elderly woman who had lived in Albuquerque since the mid-1950s; she was beside herself with wonder and amazement having never seen the city under that much snow. I was disoriented the entire drive up I-25 (not The 25 here in New Mexico) to Santa Fe. I realize now that I navigate somehow by the geography that I could no longer discern under snow!
I have all sorts of iced canales to deal with in ways for which I have no solutions (ladder? ice pick? snow shovel?). Apparently my flat New Mexico roof is probably a swimming pool of melted snow dammed up by the mighty icicles that reach from the roof to the ground. I'm hoping the "new roof" put on the house four years ago can handle this. I'll take pictures tomorrow morning, perhaps. We still have over a foot of snow on the ground here in Santa Fe. The snow plows finally reached my neighborhood this afternoon.
The weather people say we'll get another snow storm late Friday. Let's hope I can find a snow shovel & salt somewhere in Santa Fe tomorrow afternoon! The utterly dependable and loyal Pet Nannies, Hope and Melissa, dug a path through the back yard for my old dog; Eutaw really can't muster the deer hopping needed to navigate her way!
We are delighted here in New Mexico - especially the folks who were actually here during the storm. Darn it - the first Santa Fe Christmas I've missed. Go figure.
I spent the afternoon pulling out china, polishing silver and trying to figure out which closets I've stored all my bowls and serving pieces in preparation for the Feast on Thanksgiving. Steve has insisted on the biggest turkey ever - 20lb! - to feed the 10 of us and assure leftovers for days.
The table is going to look great and no one is going to go hungry unlike many New Mexicans, but something will be missing. Mom always pulled out the pineapple turkey centerpiece just to get groans from the grown children. I'm fairly sure she bought her felt turkey head and I'm sure not crafty enough to pull it together in time. I was rather shocked I could google "pineapple turkey centerpiece" and get a hit in the top five! I wonder how many other American tables are graced by this icon.
Steve is on his way to New Mexico but it looks like his flight is delayed. All over America people are probably starting to travel, even across town, to their Thanksgiving destinations.
I'm old enough to be thankful these days simply for the safety of everyone close to me. Locally we had a tragedy last week when five members of a Las Vegas family were killed by a drunk driver. Even without the considerable newspaper coverage, it has really affected everyone in this community and we've all spent time pondering the random chance and dark outcome of the terrible choices involved. Travel safe, everyone, OK?
I was out and about in search of tile in preparation for a small renovation project for my painted (what WERE they thinking?) bathroom. Being in Santa Fe, nearly all the stores I planned on visiting were closed on Saturday, or had "stepped out!" signs posted, or were out-of-business entirely.
