One tag that's been going around was to document your typical day in pictures. During my transition between jobs and moves, I'm not having typical days (unlike Robinho - whose glue making day totally trumps anything I'll come up with for a while!). However, I did want to save the vibe of a day I spent in Tecate, Mexico, at Rancho la Puerta for myself.
Business deals were going to make it nearly impossible for Steve to take a week long vacation this month in addition to our cross-country drive, and still have time for the inevitable moving days unpacking trucks and boxes that we face. So I went alone. I met fascinating people there - a few I'll keep in touch with if I can! RlaP was an easy, restful destination for a single traveller - I recommend it highly as a "break" from a busy life. It will be like a dream to remember my week in Mexico once my work life starts up again (soon!).
One goal I had at RlaP was to do lots of hiking. So each morning (except the morning it poured rain) I got up at 5:30 am. For those of you who know my morning demeanor - the picture is proof. Typically, we set out on a 3.5 mile hike with ~800 foot elevation gain. These pictures are from a seven mile "breakfast" hike. We ate on a rocky ledge overlooking the valleys and mountains near the California-Mexico border between Tecate and Jamul. Seeing the "mustangs" was really surprising (really ranch horses from a neighboring property).
The grounds, setting and amenities at RlaP were first rate. Here
are some photos. I loved smelling Cleveland sage and walking among
chapparell and mediterranean gardens again. It's still winter in
Santa Fe!
I tried to get as much cardiovascular exercise as I could - but the
pool and spa played important parts in my week. As they say at
RlaP - hammock time as is important as fitness time. I also ate well -
never went "over the wall" - on the mostly vegetarian menus all week. I
really enjoyed taking a cooking class from the executive chef - who is
aiming
to release a cook book and open a full time cooking school later this year.
